Krishna Jayakar is a professor of Telecommunications and Public Policy, teaching telecommunications management and media economics. He also serves as co-director of the Institute for Information Policy. His areas of research cover telecommunications policy and media economics, with a special interest in universal access to telecommunications.

Jayakar is a past head of the Media Management and Economics Division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, and currently serves as the Co-Editor of the Journal of Information Policy and on the board of editors of The Information Society journal. In 2023, he published (with Chun Liu) a book titled Making Policy for the New Information Economy: Comparing China and India. His research has been supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, the Pacific Telecommunications Council, the Time Warner Cable Research Program on Digital Communications, the Media Democracy Fund, AT&T and others.

He’s a three-time winner of the Deans’ Excellence Award for Integrated Scholarship (2016, 2013, 2004) and earned the Deans’ Excellence Award for Teaching in 2002.

Before joining academics, Dr. Jayakar was a research officer in India’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, drafting research reports and position papers on media policy.
